What is an MDT?
A Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) is a group of professional people who provide consultation on cases of child
abuse. The goals of a MDT are to identify children at risk for maltreatment and to help professionals communicate
with others to benefit the children.The MDT is a resource for professionals in the community who deal with abused
children. Referring a case to the MDT is a way to enhance interagency and interdisciplinary coordination.
Who is on the MDT?
The following professional are on the MDT: a probation officer, a pediatrician, two child protective services
supervisors, a child advocate, a Public Health nurse, a Deputy District Attorney, a child psychiatrist, Mental
Health, Drug & Alcohol representatives from two school districts, police department, and community counseling
agencies.

Who can bring cases to the MDT?
Any professional person who works with families of children living in Santa Clara County and who has a concern
about actual or potential abuse or neglect of a child.
Can identifying case information be disguised to retain
anonymity?
Yes. The usual designation in case presentation is by first name and last initial.
How does the MDT maintain confidentiality in case presentation?
The MDT observes the rules of professional confidentiality as mandated by law. Information discussed in the
MDT is not discussed elsewhere.
What happens to the MDT records?
The MDT Referral Form is kept by the Coordinator for statistical purposes only. All other case information
is returned to the presenter.
Is the MDT an investigative body?
No. The MDT provides a forum for case discussion and consultation to the referring professionals.
